Doing what is “Right”

When we wake up each morning, we decide what we will do for the day. Yes, some days it may be harder to decide than others, like going to work or school. But either way, we make decisions throughout the day on what we will do, many times subconsciously. When we make these decisions, most of us try to do what we feel is right or appropriate for the situation. However, what is it that is within each of us that determines what that right thing is? Did you ever stop to think that even criminals do what they think is “right” for the situation, from their own viewpoint of course. Since we all look at things from a different perspective, what we view as “right” may also be different from others. Even the Bible points this out in Proverbs 21:2 which states, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts.” God knows that our actions are based on what is in our heart; good or bad. When we are deciding on a course of action, we must realize that God will be judging those actions based on what is in our heart. Do we have a heart of love for God and others or a self-centered heart based on our own greed and desires? It often does not come naturally, nor is it often easy, but daily we need to ask for His help to have a heart of love toward others, thereby guiding our thoughts and actions.
